Following the thrilling conclusion of the Calamorro Skyrace, the Merrell Skyrunner® World Series now sets its sights on a dramatically different challenge this
Just outside Santiago, the Merrell Andes Skyrace will push athletes to their limits at elevations exceeding 3,000 meters. This shift in environment promises a unique test, with racers preparing to confront not only a demanding course but also the potential for snow and the significant physiological impact of thin air. The upcoming event is poised to be a crucial stage in the series, potentially shaping the overall standings as athletes navigate this formidable high-altitude encounter.
The unique challenge of racing at such significant altitudes will undoubtedly be a defining factor in the Andes Mountain Skyrace. Lowland athletes will face the physiological demands of reduced oxygen, requiring strategic pacing and a deep understanding of their bodies’ response.
Despite the challenge, the Andes Skyrace has become a popular choice for elite athletes. In the men’s field, the rivalry between Frederic Tranchand of France (team Merrell) and Abraham Hernandez of Mexico (team HOKA), who previously clashed in the Mexico Skychallenge, is set to reignite amidst the towering Andean peaks. The all-star men’s lineup also includes Manuel Merillas of Spain (team New Balance); Damien Humbert of France (team New Balance); Jose Manuel Quispe of Peru (team Merrell / CIVA); Gustavo Buitrago of Colombia (team Merrell); and the Scots, Jacob Adkin (team New Balance) and Ross Gollan.
Similarly, the women’s race promises a compelling battle between Anastacia Rubtsova; Paola Morales of Colombia (team Track and Mountain); Carina Mendoza of Mexico (team Corre Mejia); Blanca Llumiquinga of Ecuador (team Adidas Terrex); and Rosalia Zegarra of Peru (team Wild Mate), as they contend with the altitude, unpredictable mountain weather, and the stunning yet challenging course.
The races starts this Saturday the 12th of April at 6:00 am local time.
