SKYRUNNER WORLD SERIES ANNOUNCES 2022 CALENDAR

2022 SKYRUNNER WORLD SERIES CALENDAR

The official skyrunning circuit is back. The 2022 Skyrunner® World Series presents a calendar of 13 world-class Sky Races, a new race tier system and the return of both the SkyMasters AND the legendary SWS winner’s bib.

The quest to be crowned the best skyrunner in the world begins in France with Skyrace des Matheysins on the 8th of May 2022. From here, the global circuit visits 11 stunning and highly technical Sky Races in 10 different countries before reaching the main event of the year – the SkyMasters. At each race, skyrunners from around the world will be competing for top positions to qualify for the SkyMasters and to accumulate points towards the overall ranking.
Brand New Races Enter Series via New Tier System

In 2022, the Skyrunner® World Series brings together not only the most iconic skyraces, but a new tier system has been introduced to allow new and under-the-radar races to enter the highly competitive world of elite skyrunning.

Nina Tier One races will offer maximum points to the top 20 male and female athletes with the top 10 qualifying for the SkyMasters. Tier One includes the world’s most recognised races such as Tromsø Skyrace and the Matterhorn Ultraks « EXTREME », just to name a few.

Three Tier Two races have been selected that will award less points to the top 10 and the top five will qualify for the SkyMasters. These new races provide a great opportunity for both elite and non elite athletes to win prize money, gain points towards the overall ranking and qualify for the SkyMasters.

Louzanskyrace, Portugal; Schlegeis 3000 Skyrace, Austria; and Mt Awa Skyrace, Japan are the three Tier Two races included in the calendar for 2022.

“The Schlegeis 3000 Skyrace is one of the most technical and demanding Skyraces in Europe and we are delighted to be part of the 2022 Skyrunner World Series calendar with the world’s most renowned Skyraces. This allows us to bring our event closer to the best skyrunners in the world.”, comments Roland Eberl, Schlegeis 3000 Skyrace organiser.

All Ridges Lead To the SkyMasters

Only the best of the season will toe the line at the exclusive SkyMasters on the 8th of October 2022. This year, Gorbeia Suzien Skyrace in the Basque Country, has been carefully selected to host the final event of the calendar.

Given the success of Gorbeia Suzien in 2021, the SkyMasters is set to be an exceptional end-of-season event for athletes and fans. An exclusive section of the course will be designed specifically for the SkyMasters and plans are already underway to create a memorable evening event and prize giving ceremony where the overall season winners will be crowned.

“Gorbeia Suzien, the SkyMasters, will be a race at the highest level.” comments Jurek Ziemkiewicz, Gorbeia Suzien organiser, “Having started 10 years ago as a small-town race, our aim was always to get to the SWS and it has been a dream come true. We want to encourage sports in a healthy environment and to value the nature around us.”

Not only will the top 10 male and female runners of the SkyMasters share the 15,000€ prize money, but the highest scoring athletes of the entire Skyrunner World Series season will also be rewarded with the bonus prize money pool of 35,000€, distributed evenly amongst the best male and female competitors.
“2019 was the best year in the history of the Skyrunner World Series. The overall ranking and the introduction of the SkyMasters created a huge buzz and attracted the world’s best skyrunners – we want to get back to this in 2022.”, comments Skyrunner® World Series representative, Seana Forbes. “It’s been a tough couple of years for everyone. Our mission now is to reignite our athlete’s and fan’s passion for the sport and to deliver a great show for those watching on the mountains as well as at home. With the introduction of the new tier system, we hope to shine a light on new races and locations. We are extremely happy with the calendar this year, especially with the SkyMasters selection and are confident the athletes will enjoy it too. Most importantly, we are thrilled to announce the return of the legendary SWS winner’s bib!”
