The breathtaking landscapes of Madeira will once again serve as the stage for one of the most thrilling skyrunning events in the world, the Madeira Skyrace, which proudly returns as the seventh stage of the Merrell Skyrunner® World Series on June 15, 2024.

Nestled in the Atlantic Ocean, the Portuguese island of Madeira is renowned for its dramatic cliffs, lush forests, and challenging terrain. The Madeira Skyrace captures the essence of this natural beauty, offering a course that pushes the limits of endurance and skill. The race starts at 06:00 am (local time) in the town of Santanawhere skyrunners will face the first uphill as the sun rises. Participants will navigate through 45kilometers of rugged trails, ascending over 3,600meters, with the highest point reaching the majestic Pico Ruivo at 1,862 meters above sea level.

The only Portuguese race in the circuit will offer points towards the 2024 overall ranking and we can expect an impressive elite lineup ready to go all out.

The women’s field includes the current ranking leader, Lide Urrestarazu of Spain (team Basque Selection) and third in the overall ranking Oihana Kotazar, also of Spain (team Salomon). Other leading women include Lucille Germain of France (team Sidas Matryx), Kalie McCyrstal of Canada, Aina Cusi of Spain (team Merrell), Tanya Raab of the UK and Michelle Merlis of the USA.

In the men’s race, Portugal’s Miguel Arsenio (team Kailas) will no doubt be the local’s favourite to win with two podium places already under his belt. Arsenio will face tough competition from Loic Robert of France (team Kiprun), Gianluca Ghiano of Italy (team Brooks), Luka Kovacic of Slovenia (team Dynafit) and Ricardo Cherta of Spain (team Dynafit).
