Argentina - Technical Mountain Terrain - Patagonian Trails
Cuatro Refugios Skyrun is one of the most iconic mountain races in Patagonia and a spectacular challenge in the Skyrunner World Series. Set in the wild alpine terrain above San Carlos de Bariloche, Argentina, this demanding point-to-point Skyrace® links four legendary mountain refuges across the Nahuel Huapi range. With 40 km of racing and 3,350 m+ of climbing, it pushes athletes through steep ascents, rugged traverses, exposed ridgelines and technical descents in one of South America’s most dramatic mountain settings.
Cuatro Refugios Skyrun reaches a maximum elevation of 2,116.70 m, taking athletes high into the rugged mountains around Bariloche. The race follows the famous 4 Refugios traverse, a route that starts at the base of Cerro Catedral and crosses technical mountain terrain towards Colonia Suiza, passing the region’s best-known refuges: Frey, San Martín (Jakob), Manfredo Segre (Laguna Negra) and López.
The course is defined by relentless climbing, loose rock, alpine ridges, steep descents and constantly shifting terrain. Runners face long technical sections between refuges, exposed crossings and punishing elevation changes that demand strength, control and smart pacing from start to finish. This is a proper Patagonian mountain test, with a route widely recognised as one of Bariloche’s standout high-mountain traverses.
San Carlos de Bariloche is the main gateway for Cuatro Refugios Skyrun and the best base for athletes travelling to the race. The route is set in the mountains above the city, in the Nahuel Huapi National Park area around Cerro Catedral and Colonia Suiza.
San Carlos de Bariloche Airport (BRC) – Closest and main airport for the race
Neuquén International Airport (NQN) – Alternative domestic option with onward transfer
El Bolsón Airport (EHL) – Smaller regional option further south
The best place to stay is San Carlos de Bariloche, where athletes will find the widest range of hotels, apartments and hostels, along with restaurants, transport links and outdoor shops. Staying near Cerro Catedral can be useful for easier access to the start area, while Bariloche town offers the most practical base before and after race day. The classic 4 Refugios traverse is consistently described as running from Cerro Catedral towards Colonia Suiza through the mountains above Bariloche.
