Italy - Extreme Alpine Terrain - Technical High-Mountain Trails
Trofeo Kima is one of the most legendary races in skyrunning and a true icon of the Skyrunner World Series. Set in Val Masino, Sondrio, Italy, this brutal loop-format mountain race covers 52 km with 4,200 m+ of ascent across some of the most demanding terrain in the Alps. The course crosses seven mountain passes, moves through moraines, snowfields and exposed ridgelines, and includes fixed ropes in key sections to help runners navigate the most severe terrain safely. It is a race built for experienced mountain athletes who can handle altitude, exposure and long stretches of highly technical movement.
Trofeo Kima is defined by extreme technicality from start to finish. The official course starts and finishes in Filorera (870 m) and passes through Val di Predarossa, Rifugio Ponti, Passo Cameraccio, Passo Torrone, Rifugio Allievi-Bonacossa, Passo Averta, Passo Qualido, Passo Camerozzo, Rifugio Gianetti, Passo Barbacan, Rifugio Omio, Bagni di Masino, Piana di Bregolana and San Martino before returning to Filorera. The race climbs over seven passes above 2,500 m, with its maximum altitude at Passo Cameraccio, 2,950m.
The terrain includes mountain paths but also steep climbs, punishing descents, fixed ropes, snow, exposed ledges, stony ground and narrow technical sections that demand total concentration. The organiser explicitly describes the race as requiring “good physical preparation and extreme caution,” which tells you everything about the seriousness of the route. This is not just a long race in the mountains – it is one of the toughest technical tests in the sport.
Trofeo Kima is based in Val Masino in the province of Sondrio, northern Italy. For most international athletes, the easiest access is via the Milan airports followed by onward road or rail travel towards Sondrio and Val Masino. The official race site places the event in Val Masino, Sondrio, Italy, making that the clearest travel anchor for the page.
Milan Bergamo Airport (BGY) – Popular airport for easy access to northern Italian mountain events
Milan Malpensa Airport (MXP) – Main international option for overseas athletes
Milan Linate Airport (LIN) – Alternative airport for shorter European connections
The best place to stay is Val Masino or nearby in the Sondrio area, depending on availability and your transport plans. Staying in or very near Val Masino is the most practical choice for race logistics, especially given the early start, mountain weather uncertainty and the race’s demanding nature. The organiser’s own positioning of the event around Filorera and the Val Masino valley makes that the natural base for athletes and support crews.
This is an extremely technical race, so alpine experience matters as much as fitness
Weather can affect the schedule, with 23 August 2026 reserved as a backup day if needed
Expect exposed sections, rope-assisted terrain and potentially snow in higher sections
Arriving early helps with mountain prep, route logistics and kit checks
Staying in Val Masino keeps race-morning travel much simpler
