Madeira Skyrace takes athletes deep into the dramatic mountain landscapes of Madeira, with the race centred around Santana on the north side of the Portuguese island.
The course covers approximately 55 km with 4,100 metres of ascent, combining long mountain climbs, highly technical trails and exposed sections requiring confident movement over rugged terrain. The route climbs towards Pico Ruivo, Madeira’s highest peak at 1,862 metres, creating a demanding journey from lower elevations into the island’s high mountains.
Madeira Skyrace is characterised by steep gradients, technical ridges and sections where runners must use fixed ropes or chains to move safely through the terrain.
The course has included challenging via ferrata-style sections as runners progress towards Pico Ruivo. Rapid changes in elevation, rocky trails and exposed mountain terrain make strength, concentration and confident footwork essential.
Madeira’s mountainous interior also creates a striking contrast between forest, rugged peaks and views towards the Atlantic Ocean.
Plan your journey around Santana, on the northern side of Madeira, where the race has traditionally been based.
Most international visitors arrive through Madeira’s main airport near Funchal before continuing to Santana by road. Allow additional time for the journey across the island, particularly when travelling with race equipment.

Santana is the most convenient base for accessing the race area and provides accommodation close to the surrounding mountain terrain.
Funchal and other areas of Madeira offer a wider choice of accommodation, although runners should account for additional travel time to Santana. Confirm registration, start and finish locations before booking.
