Ibarra, Ecuador · 21 km · 2,000 m+ · 4,560 m High Point
The Ibarra Skyrace® is an intense, high-altitude challenge in the Skyrunner World Series, climbing deep into the Ecuadorian Andes above the city of Ibarra. This out-and-back Skyrace® features steep volcanic slopes, rugged technical trails and thin air as athletes reach a staggering 4,560 m above sea level. With 2,000 m+ of elevation packed into 21 km, the race is short, sharp and brutally demanding for elite runners and U23 skyrunners alike.
The Ibarra Skyrace® begins near the city before immediately climbing the steep, volcanic Andean slopes surrounding the region.
As the route rises above 4,000 m, the air thins sharply, making every step a test of endurance and altitude adaptation. Runners tackle loose volcanic soil, rocky segments and exposed ridgelines before reaching the high point at 4,560 m and returning along the same rugged terrain. The out-and-back format adds a dynamic element, with athletes meeting competitors on narrow high-mountain trails.
Ibarra is accessible via Quito, with a scenic drive north into the Andes leading to the race venue.
