Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia · 26 km · 2,800 m+ · 4,030 m High Point
The Climbathon is one of the most iconic and physically demanding races in the Skyrunner World Series, scaling the immense granite face of Mount Kinabalu. Starting in Kota Kinabalu National Park, this out-and-back Skyrace® climbs through humid rainforest before reaching the exposed high-altitude rock slopes above 4,000 m. With 2,800 m+ of ascent over just 26 km, the race is short, steep and known worldwide as a true mountain endurance test.
The Climbathon begins in humid jungle trails before rising sharply toward the dramatic granite formations of Mount Kinabalu.
The ascent becomes progressively steeper, transitioning from forested paths to wooden steps and finally to vast open rock slabs. At over 4,000 m, runners face thin air, exposed terrain and breathtaking summit views. The out-and-back format means athletes encounter each other along narrow high-altitude routes, adding intensity to an already demanding challenge.
Kota Kinabalu is a major travel hub in Malaysian Borneo, with direct flights from across Southeast Asia and easy access to Kinabalu National Park.
Kota Kinabalu International Airport (BKI) – Closest and main access point
Kuala Lumpur (KUL) – Major international hub
Singapore (SIN) – Popular long-haul connection
Accommodation ranges from hotels in Kota Kinabalu to mountain lodges inside the national park, with the most convenient options located in Kota Kinabalu, Kundasang and Kinabalu Park HQ, all providing fast access to the race start.
Humidity is extremely high at lower elevations — hydrate well
