Yading Skyrace

China - High-Altitude Mountain Terrain - Alpine Tibetan Trails

About Yading Skyrace

Yading Skyrace is one of the most spectacular high-altitude races in the Skyrunner World Series, set in the breathtaking mountain landscapes of Daocheng Yading in Sichuan, China. This point-to-point Skyrace® takes athletes deep into one of Asia’s most dramatic alpine regions, where towering peaks, vast plateaus and remote Tibetan trails create a truly unforgettable racing experience. With 32 km of racing, 2,800 m+ of climbing and a highest point of 4,735 m, Yading is a serious test of endurance, pacing and altitude adaptation for elite mountain runners.

Course Profile & Technical Terrain

Yading Skyrace climbs to extreme altitude, reaching a highest point of 4,735 m, making it one of the most demanding high-mountain races in the series. Set in the Daocheng Yading area of Sichuan, the route takes runners through exposed alpine trails, rugged mountain slopes and remote plateau terrain in a landscape known for its sacred peaks and dramatic natural scenery. The race returned to the Skyrunner World Series in 2026 after last appearing in 2019, adding even more anticipation to its comeback.

The course demands strong climbing legs, efficient movement at altitude and the ability to handle long exposed sections where oxygen is limited and weather can shift quickly. The wider Daocheng Yading area sits largely above 3,000 to 4,000 metres, so athletes must be prepared for the impact of elevation as much as the physical terrain itself. This is a race where smart pacing, hydration and altitude awareness are just as important as technical mountain skill.

TRAVEL & ACCOMMODATION

Getting There

The main gateway for Yading Skyrace is Daocheng Yading Airport (DCY), which serves the race area in western Sichuan. The airport is around 50 km from Daocheng County, roughly 123 km from Shangri-La Town, and about 128 km from the Yading Nature Reserve area, with onward travel typically by shuttle, taxi or private transfer. Chengdu is the main major city connection and remains the most practical international arrival point before continuing inland to Daocheng.

Airports:

  • Daocheng Yading Airport (DCY) – Closest and main airport for the race

  • Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport (CTU) – Main international gateway for onward domestic travel

  • Chengdu Tianfu International Airport (TFU) – Alternative Chengdu airport for connecting flights

Where to Stay

The most practical base for athletes is the Daocheng / Shangri-La Town / Yading Village area, depending on race logistics and organiser guidance closer to race week. Yading Village and the surrounding scenic area provide the closest access to the reserve, while Daocheng offers a broader base for travel connections and accommodation planning. The reserve itself is a very high-altitude area with many of its key locations above 3,000–4,000 m, so arriving early to adjust is a smart move.

Local Tips:

  • Altitude is the biggest factor here, so acclimatisation should be taken seriously

  • Weather can shift fast in the mountains, even during summer race season

  • Bring layers, sun protection and a strong hydration plan for dry high-altitude conditions

  • Technical trail shoes with confident grip are essential for rough mountain terrain

  • Arriving via Chengdu and then transferring to Daocheng is usually the simplest travel plan
